What's this hullaballoo?
Why, you've asked the wrong question!
It’s not a WHAT, But a WHO!
A WHO whom acts different,
Innovates and renews,
And now that I think it…
It might just be true!
What’s a Quirkipreneur?
Well, it might just be YOU!”
Pseudo-Suessian rhymes aside, a Quirkipreneur is (somewhat obviously) a quirky entrepreneur… a person who brings their creative, unique, and relatable self to the business-y bits of their projects and ventures.
The ranks of Quirkipreneurs include creators, inventors, makers, disruptors. We're artists, performers, poets, and visionaries; software developers, fashion designers, magazine editors, coaches, and consultants. We’re moms and dads and yoga teachers, writers and organizers, preachers and party planners and protesters, all with an extra, added twist of quirk.
Maybe we do our accounting on polka-dotted Post-it notes, instead of in QuickBooks.
Maybe we tossed out our to-do lists in favor of drawing our days out like treasure maps.
Maybe we collage our inventory lists, wear pajamas to our client meetings, write our business plans in iambic pentameter, Perl script, or Klingon.
Maybe our big vision for our business isn’t world domination, but paying the bills, helping other people, or just having as much fun as we possibly can. What if our the goal IS World Domination! There’s room for that, too… besides, who am I to judge another’s quirks?
You may have noticed web-gurus (and even major corporations) giving lip service to disruptive innovation and creative approaches. But with a few notable exceptions? Most keep Creativity safely corralled in their Marketing Departments. Oh, sure, Innovation may be let out to graze a bit in Research & Development, but only as long as it stays within the Safety-Zone-of-Mainstream-Acceptability.
That’s not how we do things around here.
Quirkipreneurs do our damnedest to infuse creativity throughout our entire business culture. Creativity needn’t be limited to one or two parts of a business; we think innovation belongs in sales, in accounting, in customer service and human resources and editing and and and… well, we believe in putting creativity on EVERYTHING, like it was whipped topping, or cream gravy, or Sirracha sauce. (But not all three together, please. Because, well, eww!)
Now, don’t go thinking we’re a bunch of empty-headed woo-woo artists, splattering glitter on everything to cover up a lack of substance. As Quirkipreneurs, we understand the value of traditional, businessy-bits of doing business, and we’re using those bits as a sort of supportive scaffold for our own ideas.
Being a Quirkipreneur is about transforming business practices, not erasing them. It’s about forging a new creative path, while acknowledging the usefulness of the existing one. It’s about using both sides of the brain, recognizing the value of both logical and abstract thinking, conscious and subconscious processing. It’s about infusing our business with its own personality, and having fun even with the most boring bits of being in business.
So, now you know what a Quirkipreneur is -- it's someone who merges savvy, time-tested business practices with quirky, innovative approaches. We may look a little crazy from time to time, but we have fun, by gawd - which explains the current blog tagline: "A Madcap Band of Biz Savvy Creatives."
